Lar Plain or Lar National Park is one of the large, cozy and pleasant forest parks in Iran, part of which is located in Tehran province and another part in Mazandaran province. A range of beautiful flowers and unique landscapes, as well as the presence of Damavand Mountain, the highest mountain in Iran, has made this region a special and touristic place. Lar plain has two cold and humid climates and sees a lot of rain and snow throughout the year. Due to the special climatic conditions of this region, various plants and animal species live there.  One of the rarest aquatic species in the world is the red spotted trout, which is found in abundance in this region. The catchment area of ​​Lar Dam is about 675 square kilometers and its average water flow reaches 481 million cubic meters per year.

 

Lar dam (Lar lake) rivers

Beautiful rivers flow around Lar dam and in the vast plain of Lar, among which calls Div-e-Asyab. Sefid Ab river is another clear river of Lar plain that ends in Lar lake. The bed of Sefid River is covered with a layer of lime and its maximum water capacity reaches 15 meters at the peak of rainfall. Other rivers in Lar plain include different rivers, all of which play a role in supplying drinking water to parts of Tehran and its surroundings.

Suitable geographical conditions and consecutive rains in this region made the Lar plain to have a lot of plant diversity. About 400 plant species have been found in the area, many of which are edible and have healing properties.
Examples of edible plants of Lar plain and its heights include astragalus, Thyme, wild Mushrooms, Chicory, Angelica, Circus, Onion, Turmeric, Licorice and mountain Tea.
In spring, the plain will be covered with a wide variety of colorful and beautiful flowers such as Anemones, Tulips, Wild Purple lilies, purple lilies, Yellow Flowers and made an infinitely beautiful scene. Also, with the onset of spring and successive rains, edible mushrooms and a kind of rare garlic grow in the Lar plains, which have many medicinal properties.

 

Fauna of Lar lake and plain

Lar plain and lake have a temperate climate and suitable geographical conditions for the life of many living animals.  Birds such as partridge, Eagle, Cranes and Flamingo are bird species of mountainous areas of Lar plain.  Golden eagle is one of the rare bird species that its habitat is in the highest peaks of Lar region. Also, animals such as Brown Bears, Leopards, Wolves, Rabbits, Bats, Deer, Foxes, Otters, Ewes, Goats, Hogs and feral cats are among the mammals of the valleys of this region. The diversity of food and climatic conditions of Lar plain made these animals to have good growth and have many births throughout the year.

High and soaring mountain ranges surround the plain and the Lar dam (Lar lake), the peaks of which are covered with snow in most seasons, mountains such as Damavand, Yakh-e-Kemar, Div-e-Asyab, Gol-e-Zard, Kūh-e Namak Kows̄ar, Siahchal, Aro, Panhak, Kūh-e Zereshkī, Kamardasht, Kūh-e Asb-e Kālak, Kūh-e Kāfar Rāh and Kabud are among the famous mountains of this region.

 

Essential points for traveling to Lar plain and lake

  • If you want to visit this region with good weather and tourism, you should consider the necessary points for traveling to the plain and lake. Having fresh water is one of the most essential points, that must be observed because there is no drinking water in this area.
  • There is no mobile access in this area.
  • The sun shines brightly in these plains because there is no shade tree in this area, it is necessary to have a hat or umbrella to prevent direct sunlight.
  • Note that there are dangerous and poisonous snakes and reptiles in this area, IMT recommend to having shoe gaiters for reducing the risks of these some extents.
